À propos de Giovanni Battista Caviglia - 3e partie

La parole maintenant à Howard Vyse qui a certainement le plus écrit sur Caviglia. Et pour cause : ils se trouvaient ensemble sur le chantier d' "excavation" de la Grande Pyramide. Mais le moins que l'on puisse dire est que le courant passait mal entre ces deux égyptologues au tempérament bien trempé. Au point, comme on le lira ci-dessous, que Vyse avait quelque doute sur la qualité de jugement et les compétences de Caviglia. Pire : il n'avait pas confiance en lui et se faisait fort de remettre à leur juste place les supposées découvertes de celui à qui il avait pourtant servi de parrain en égyptologie.
Non, non ! précise Howard Vyse, "I never entertained the slightest hostility towards him" (je n'ai jamais entretenu la moindre hostilité à son encontre), mais ça y ressemble fort !
Il sera donc grandement temps d'avoir, même indirectement, le point de vue de Caviglia lui-même. Tel sera l'objet de ma prochaine et dernière note consacrée à ce personnage hors du commun.

"At the Great Pyramid, misled by an erroneous opinion of the vertical direction of part of the southern air-channel, which he stated that he himself had ascertained by actual experiment, M. Caviglia expended much time and labour in enlarging an excavation, begun by him some years before, on the southern side of Davison's Chamber. The height of the King's Chamber is nineteen feet one inch ; the average thickness of the granite blocks forming the roof of the King's, and floor of Davison's Chambers, is at least three or four feet, which, together, amount to about twenty-two or twenty-three feet ; the height of the mouth of the channel from the floor of the King's Chamber is three feet.


Now, M. Caviglia stated that, after passing horizontally through the wall of the King's Chamber for five feet, the southern airchannel ascended vertically for fourteen (making the total height from the floor of the King's Chamber seventeen feet), and that it afterwards turned off in an unknown direction, probably towards the centre of the pyramid. He accordingly deepened the abovementioned excavation, in order to cut down upon the channel ; and, having failed in that object, he continued the operation towards the centre of the pyramid.
This excavation is to be seen in nearly the same state as it was at M. Caviglia's departure, scarcely any additional labour having been expended upon it, and that, not so much with a view of intercepting the air-channel, as with the intention of getting above the ceiling of Davison's Chamber, upon which undertaking Mr. Perring and myself determined after our examination on the night of the 12th of February .

On the 13th, Mr. Perring reported that, having been again in Davison's Chamber, he had taken the men from the southern side of that apartment, and set them to work for the sake of greater convenience at the end of the passage to the north of it, where a small stick had been inserted on the preceding evening for about the length of two feet up a crevice in an open joint on the eastern side of the corner granite block, that formed part of the ceiling of the chamber.
Caviglia states that he had discovered an unexplored passage, in which we were still prosecuting our labours when he left the Pyramids, and in which, he would lead the public to infer, that he had commenced an opening into Wellington's Chamber. Now, there is positively no passage in this part of the building but that leading into Davison's Chamber and the air-channel. The former had been open, at all events, since 1764 ; and the latter was, at the time, entirely unexplored, and remained so till the 29th of May 1837, when it was ascertained that no part of it was in a vertical direction as M. Caviglia had confidently asserted, but that it continued in one inclination from the wall of the King's Chamber to the exterior of the pyramid, at a considerable distance, and perfectly inaccessible from the excavation at the south of Davison's Chamber, in which so much time and expense had been, in consequence of M. Caviglia's unaccountable mistake, so long and so inconsiderately wasted.
Had M. Caviglia ever entertained an idea of getting above Davison's Chamber, by any other means excepting by that of the southern air-channel, it is manifest that instead of excavating downwards and towards the centre of the pyramid, he would have worked upwards in the calcareous stone on either the eastern or western side of that apartment. (1) The exact spot was of no consequence, excepting as it afforded greater facility for cutting through the stone, which was the sole reason why the one at the end of the passage was fixed upon ; but if any great merit is to be attached to its selection, Mr. Perring should be immortalised ; and it should be named, according to the ideas of the anonymous correspondent, " Perring's Hole, or Passage."
With regard to the northern air-channel, it appears, by M. Caviglia's Italian exposé, that in 1820 he tried to ascertain its direction (as many other people have done), by the insertion of long sticks, which led him to the conclusion that " there were other apartments in the interior of this monument," (2) and that, having failed, as might have been reasonably expected, in cutting through the blocks of granite, "assistito da quella costanza che gli e tutta propria, immaginò di aprire un nuovo sentiero nella pietra calcarea aderente al granito". This excavation he followed up in his last operations to the extent altogether of thirty-six feet without any beneficial result, and the work was accordingly discontinued on the 13th of February.
When this channel was ultimately opened from above, it appeared that, like that to the south, it had no communication with any other chambers, - a fact directly at variance with M. Caviglia's conjectures, formed "after years of labour and study" which intense application might have been spared, if he had taken an excursion over the exterior of the pyramid, where the forced mouth of the northern air-channel, and the aperture of the southern, were plainly to have been seen. I have already mentioned that the one was discovered accidentally by Mr. Perring, and the other in one day by Abd El Ardi. Indeed, whoever has examined these extraordinary buildings must be aware how idle it is to talk of secrets and of study, about what there is little or no analogy, or data, to go by. Proofs are not wanting, that most of the discoveries at the Pyramids (excepting those of the Caliphs, who appear to have possessed some knowledge of their interior formation), have been the result of conjecture, and many of mere accident. 

It is only necessary to instance M. Caviglia's interesting discovery in 1817, of the communication between the upper and lower passages by means of the well. It is 191 feet 6 inches in depth, and it had been examined in 1764 by Mr. Davison for 155 feet, so that the space of 36 feet 6 inches was all that remained unexplored at that time ; and a good deal of sand was removed by the French in 1800. The difficulty of respiration, however, of course remained the same till the lower passage had also been cleared out. And it seems, by Mr. Salt's account, that, notwithstanding his perseverance and industry, M. Caviglia failed entirely in his attempt to penetrate through the well, and was obliged to give up the operation as hopeless ; but that, in clearing out the lower passage leading to the subterraneous apartment, (which, however, had also been entered by Mr. Davison, to the extent of 131 feet,) he unexpectedly effected his former purpose, as the rubbish in the well naturally fell down as fast as it was taken out at the bottom, and thus M. Caviglia, whilst directing his attention to another object, unintentionally made a most important discovery, and put an end to the doubts and speculations, that had existed respecting the well for above 2000 years.
At the commencement of our operations, I certainly imagined that M. Caviglia was better acquainted than any other person with the interior of the Great Pyramid ; but my confidence in his judgment and skill was considerably lessened when he proposed that the boring-rods should be used on the granite floor of the King's Chamber, and also that they should be worked downwards from the exterior of the pyramid upon the northern end of the great passage, for the sake of ventilation ; a distance, in his opinion, of about 40 feet, but which afterwards proved nearly 200 feet. After this latter exposition of the knowledge he had so laboriously acquired of the relative distances of the several parts of this edifice, and after other similar instances, that could be advanced, I had not much reliance upon him. (…)
At the Third Pyramid, M. Caviglia had begun a narrow passage from the southern end of the upper excavation made by the Mamelukes, "in the hope," as he says, "of being able to penetrate more easily the interior than by searching for an entrance at the base", which proves that, "after years of labour and study", he knew no more of the interior of that pyramid than of the others, as the entrance is considerably below the lower excavation, and as the whole of the apartments are entirely subterraneous. On the 13th of February, M. Caviglia's passage had only arrived at the length of six feet, notwithstanding the apparent satisfaction with which he mentioned, in his letter of the 17th of January, the progress he had made, and that he was within sixty feet of the centre of the pyramid. As I afterwards carried on this work to the centre, and sunk shafts to the foundation, without finding any passage or apartment, it is clear that I received from M. Caviglia no more assistance in the discoveries made at this pyramid, than in other instances. (…)
Having now clearly shewn that I never received from M. Caviglia the slightest useful information, or assistance (which indeed was not in his power to afford), but that on the contrary I had much reason to complain of the ill-judged and feeble manner, in which he attempted, most unsuccessfully, to carry on the intentions of the firmaun, and particularly also of the time and labour which he wasted on other trifling objects, I have now most distinctly and indignantly to deny, that any determination existed between Colonel Campbell and myself "to dispense with his services, and to profit in concert by the results of his previous studies and researches", which, it is falsely stated, he "so freely imparted ";-an imputation which can only affect the character of the persons who have so vainly endeavoured to cast it on Colonel Campbell and myself. M. Caviglia's dismissal on the 12th of February, was the consequence of his own unwarrantable conduct.
The details, which I have thought it necessary to draw up respecting the recent discoveries at the Pyramids, will sufficiently prove that I entertain no silly vanity respecting them, but that on the other hand I have endeavoured to give full credit to those gentlemen, by whose skill and perseverance I have been so materially assisted ; and I here beg to assure M. Caviglia how much I regret that it is not in my power to make similar acknowledgments to him. The tenour of my answer to his application, made through Mr. Galloway, on the 7th of March, to be allowed to return to the Pyramids, will shew that I never entertained the slightest hostility towards him, although it was evidently impossible to accede to his request. I could also, were it necessary, appeal to Mr. Wilkinson's testimony, that I sedulously avoided any allusions to these unpleasant transactions, beyond what were necessary to make intelligible the operations afterwards so successfully carried on at Gizeh : nor should I have now entered into so long and disagreeable a detail, had it not been for the groundless and foul accusations publicly preferred, in M. Caviglia's name, against Colonel Campbell and myself."


  
(1) Since this statement was written, Lord Lindsay's book has been published, and the following passage will remove all further doubt on the subject. His lordship visited the Pyramids in December 1836, and, after describing the King's Chamber, and M. Caviglia's excavation along the course of the northern air-channel, he says: " 'Now', says Caviglia, 'I will shew you how I hope to find out where the southern passage leads to.' Returning to the landing-place at the top of the grand staircase, we mounted a ricketty ladder to the narrow passage that leads to Davison's Chamber (so named after the English consul at Algiers, who discovered it seventy years ago) ; it is directly above the King's Chamber, the ceiling of the one forming the floor of the other. The ceiling of Davison's Chamber consists of eight stones, beautifully worked ; and this ceiling, which is so low that you can only sit cross-legged under it, Caviglia believes to be the floor of another large room above it, which he is now trying to discover. To this room he concludes the little passage leads that branches from the south side of the King's Chamber. He has accordingly dug down into the calcareous stone at the further end of Davison's Chamber, in the hopes of meeting it ; once found, it will probably lead him to the place he is in quest of. And now, I am sure, if I have been happy enough to inspire you with a tithe of the interest with which I followed every winding of the pyramid, and of our cicerone's mind (itself a most extraordinary labyrinth), you will be glad to hear that there seems every probability of his soon reaching the little passage. Leaving a servant in the excavation, descending to the King's Chamber, and shouting at the hole, the man answered by striking on the stone distinct strokes, - as satisfactory a reply as could be wished for." With respect to the latter part of this quotation, I can only say that, believing upon M. Caviglia's authority that the air-channel was vertical, and that the excavation was consequently near it, I have repeatedly endeavoured to ascertain its direction, by listening in Davison's Chamber to noises made high up in the passage, but always without success ; and the accompanying plan laid down by Mr. Perring will shew that it is impossible I could have done so. The sounds, therefore, mentioned by Lord Lindsay, must have been conveyed through the passage by which his lordship had ascended to Davison's Chamber. 
(2) It is scarcely possible to enter the King's Chamber without observing the two air-channels. Greaves, who travelled in 1638, describes the opening of that to the south to have been forced, and also to have been blackened with smoke.

Aspects du chantier des pyramides de Guizeh, tel que décrit par J.S. Perring (XIXe s.)

L'ingénieur, égyptologue et anthropologue britannique John Shae Perring, ingénieur (1813-1869) fit équipe avec le colonel Howard Vyse pour la fouille des pyramides de la région memphite. Ses observations ont donné naissance à l'ouvrage The pyramids of Gizeh, from actual survey and admeasurement illustrated by notes and references to the several plans, with sketches taken on the spot, by E.J. Andrews, 1839, dans lequel Andrews joue le rôle complémentaire de reporter et d'illustrateur, alors que Perring est bien l'auteur des informations et illustrations techniques (description du site et de la Grande Pyramide, théorie sur les techniques de construction, schéma topographique et dessins des éléments intérieurs de la pyramide).

Les pyramides de Guizeh se situent sur un socle rocheux, au nord-ouest de l'ancienne Memphis, qui a abondamment servi de carrière pour la construction des pyramides et des bâtiments adjacents, l'emplacement ainsi creusé ayant par la suite été utilisé comme cimetière.
La chaussée nord de la Grande Pyramide est celle décrite par Hérodote. Aujourd'hui, il ne reste plus rien des "marbres polis et ornés de figures d'animaux". Des vestiges de seulement la moitié de cette chaussée sont encore visibles, ainsi que quelques traces dans les champs cultivés dans le prolongement.
Quant à la chaussée sud, elle ne paraît pas avoir le moindre lien direct avec la route construite à partir de la face est de la Troisième Pyramide, mais plutôt avoir été utilisée pour l'évacuation des pierres extraites du rocher saillant côté ouest : un pont semble indiquer qu'un canal passait auparavant par là.
La Grande Pyramide est attribuée à Suphis qui est supposé avoir vécu 2100 ans av. J.-C. La plus grande partie des blocs de pierre qui la composent a été extraite du rocher sur lequel elle a été construite. Les blocs sont grossièrement équarris, mais mis en place en assises régulières, dont la hauteur varie de 4 pieds 10 pouces à 2 pieds 2 pouces.

Partout où ces assises (courses) sont exposées à la vue, comme sur la plate-forme au sommet de l'édifice, dans la Chambre de la Reine et le couloir qui y conduit ou encore en d'autres endroits aux angles extérieurs, des trous circulaires peuvent être observés : de 8 pouces environ de diamètre et de 4 pouces de profondeur, ils ont apparemment été creusés pour l'installation des machines mentionnées par Hérodote et ayant, selon lui, servi à élever les blocs de pierre d'une assise à l'autre. Ces machines présentent des similitudes avec le polyspaston que décrira Vitruve, quelque 350 années après Hérodote
Les blocs de revêtement et ceux qui sont apparents dans les chambres et les couloirs sont du calcaire compact, avec peu de traces de fossiles. Les géologues l'appellent swinestone (pierre de cochon) ou stinkstone (pierre qui pue), car il émet une odeur fétide lorsqu'on le frappe. Il a été transporté du mont Moqattam, sur le côté Arabique de la vallée du Nil. Par contre, les blocs extraits du côté Libyque, là où les pyramides sont situées, ont une texture granuleuse et non compacte, du fait de la présence en abondance de fossiles marins. Ils ne sont pas adaptés à une mise en œuvre précise et sont sujets à désintégration.
La préparation des blocs a vraisemblablement été peaufinée au pied de la pyramide, côté nord, là où plusieurs rangées, distantes de 4 ou 5 pieds, de 3 ou 4 trous circulaires d'environ 12 pouces de diamètre et 10 pouces de profondeur, servaient apparemment à l'installation de dispositifs pour la manutention, le déplacement et la taille finale des blocs.
Le mortier utilisé pour les blocs de revêtement et dans les couloirs étaient à base de chaux ; par contre, dans le corps de la pyramide, il était composé de brique rouge, de gravier, de terre du Nil et de granit concassé, ou bien de pierre calcaire et de chaux. En certains endroits, les bâtisseurs ont également utilisé un mortier liquide à base de sable du désert et de gravillons.
Les joints des blocs de revêtement découverts à la base de la face nord, ainsi que ceux des chambres du Roi et de la Reine et ceux des couloirs sont si foins qu'ils sont à peine perceptibles.
La partie de revêtement toujours en place au sommet de la Seconde Pyramide montre comment les bâtisseurs égyptiens procédaient. Ce revêtement, en pierres grossièrement équarries pour leur donner l'angle requis, était construit en couches (layers) horizontales correspondant aux assises de la pyramide. Les angles (angular projections) ou les bords supérieurs des pierres étaient ensuite taillés (trimmed), à partir du haut, pour former finalement une surface lisse et uniforme
Les entailles sur les côtés de la Grande Galerie avaient probablement été prévues pour l'insertion de leviers ou de traverses lors de la manœuvre de transport du sarcophage royal vers la chambre supérieure. Après quoi, certaines ont été rebouchées. Quant aux longues rainures (grooves) qui courent tout le long de chaque côté de la galerie, il est difficile de leur assigner leur réelle raison d'être : elles sont grossièrement taillées et, par conséquent, n'ont pu être utilisées pour recevoir une plate-forme "glissante" (sliding platform). Peut-être étaient-elles destinées à recevoir un échafaudage pour faciliter la tâche des ouvriers chargés des finitions sur les murs de la galerie.
Dans la chambre intermédiaire [Chambre de la Reine] et le couloir horizontal qui y mène, les ouvriers ont dû stocker les blocs destinés à boucher le couloir ascendant au terme de la construction de la pyramide. Après cette opération, ils ont quitté la pyramide par le puits au sommet duquel une pierre a dû être placée.

La maçonnerie de la Chambre du Roi (Grande Pyramide de Guizeh) : "probablement le plus beau spécimen au monde" (Howard Vyse - XVIIIe-XIXe s.)

Après un premier volet consacré à l'état des lieux des pyramides de Guizeh lorsque Richard William Howard Vyse (1784-1853) arrive au Caire pour commencer sa "campagne d'Égypte", je propose ici une lecture en diagonale de l'ouvrage de cet égyptologue britannique : Operations carried on at the pyramids of Gizeh in 1837, à la recherche d'éventuels indices sur les techniques de construction des pyramides, que les chercheurs auraient pu remarquer.
Certes, tel n'était pas le but premier de l'ouvrage, celui-ci étant plutôt un compte rendu détaillé, jour après jour, des "opérations" engagées pour inventorier les entrailles des pyramides. Mais au cours d'une trouvaille, lors de l'inventaire d'une nouvelle chambre découverte, au moment du bilan d'une journée plus ou moins fructueuse, l'auteur risque une remarque, un commentaire, une suggestion visant à mieux appréhender les intentions et savoir-faire des bâtisseurs égyptiens.
On le remarquera, l'interprétation n'est pas exempte d'hésitations ou d'imprécisions. Elle ne donne nulle impression en tout cas d'être guidée par une quelconque théorie : seul l'inévitable Hérodote reste en point de mire. Par contre, c'est le "terrain" qui parle et que l'on tente de comprendre au mieux, à partir d'une observation directe, in situ.
Toutes les citations, de 1 à 10, sont extraites du volume I de l'ouvrage. Seule la citation n° 11 est extraite du volume II.
Conformément à  l'habitude de ce blog, je laisse la place, en dépit de ses imperfections, au logiciel de traduction pour ceux qui seraient quelque peu "en délicatesse" avec la langue anglaise (voir en bas de page). Je me contente d'indiquer quelques points importants des extraits que j'ai retenus.
1 - Difficulté de comprendre la véritable raison de la construction de ces merveilleux édifices si l'on n'y voit que des monuments funéraires.
2 - Observations faites au moment d'une tentative de percement de la face sud de la Grande Pyramide : fixation et jointoiement des blocs de pierre ; nature du mortier ; provenance des pierres.
3 - État du sol de la Chambre de Belzoni, dans la seconde pyramide.
4 - Des trous remarqués dans la Chambre de la Reine, à l'angle nord-ouest de la seconde pyramide et dans d'autres endroits, et ayant servi, selon Perring, à l'installation des "machines en bois" mentionnées par Hérodote.
5 - Le Chambre de Wellington, tout comme celle de Davison : de simples vides ou "chambres de construction", pour alléger la Chambre du Roi du poids de l'édifice.
6 - Observation de trous de différentes formats à l'extérieur de la Grande Pyramide, principalement à l'angle nord-est, avec la présence d'un sillon, ces aménagements du terrain ayant, semble-t-il, été utilisés pour l'installation d'un échafaudage ou d'une "machinerie".
7 - En relation avec le récit d'Hérodote, selon lequel la chambre funéraire aurait été entourée par les eaux du Nil, donc souterraine, des travaux de creusement ont été effectués, il y a très longtemps, du côté de la face nord de la Grande Pyramide pour retrouver un éventuel couloir descendant à cette chambre. Mais sans résultat.
Par ailleurs, "un grand espace de temps a dû s'écouler avant la dissimulation effective des vraies entrées de la pyramide, par l'accumulation de pierres et de déchets, de telle manière que même leur position fut oubliée".
8 - Observation de deux pierres de revêtement, en parfait état et dans leur position d'origine. "Il n'y a aucune raison de douter que tout l'extérieur de cette vaste structure [Grande Pyramide] fut recouvert par cette même excellente maçonnerie."
9 - État du toit "incliné" de la chambre dite "de Campbell". Présence de trous sur le sol de cette chambre, apparemment pour soutenir des étais temporaires en bois lors de la mise en place du toit. Ouverture des joints. Présence de marques de carriers, probablement pour obtenir des angles droits.
10 - Plusieurs détails techniques attestent de l'importance majeure de la chambre du Roi : les canaux de ventilation, les chambres supérieures pour l'effet de décharge, le soin apporté à la maçonnerie de la chambre, "probablement le plus beau spécimen au monde".
11 – Présence à nouveau de trous sur les murs et le sol de la chambre funéraire de la troisième pyramide, comme "supports d'un échafaudage" lors de la finition des murs ou bien de la dépose du sarcophage.

1 - I had not at that time any idea that the stupendous masses of the pyramids were composed of solid masonry, and that (with the exception of the King's, and Queen's Chambers, and the adjoining passages and chambers of construction afterwards discovered in this pyramid) the apartments were invariably excavations in the solid rock. Indeed, after having ascertained the fact almost beyond the possibility of a doubt, it was difficult to believe it, or to comprehend an adequate motive for the construction of these magnificent buildings merely as sepulchral monuments over a tomb, unless it was the all-powerful influence of superstitious feelings.

2 - The excavation for a southern entrance in the Great Pyramid was begun at the distance of twenty-four feet westwards from the centre, and carried on to the depth of thirty feet, which was a work of considerable difficulty and labour, and was not finished till the 29th of May. (a) The stones were very large, and the half of each of them was keyed in under the upper layer, besides which, many of them were in slanting directions, although in horizontal courses ; it became therefore necessary to break almost every block before it could be removed. (b) The mortar was nearly as the stone itself, so that with Arab workmen, and common tools, it was a most tedious operation. To obviate some of these difficulties, I ordered the people to get up twenty or thirty feet, and to cut perpendicularly down behind the stones; but very little advantage was gained in proportion to the increased number, which required to be removed. Towards the end of this work gunpowder was used with great effect.
(a) The principal part of the blocks composing the pyramids were quarried from the rock on which they stand, and abound with fossil remains ; but, for the casing of the exterior, for the lining of the passages, and for many other particular parts, they were brought from the Mokattam, and consisted of a compact limestone which contains few fossils, and is termed by geologists swine-stone.
(b) Mr. Perring observed that the mortar used for the casing and lining of the passages was of lime only ; that in the body of the pyramid it was composed of red brick, gravel, Nile earth, crushed granite, and calcareous stone, and of lime ; and that for fillings in desert sand was employed in a grout of liquid mortar.

3 - The floor in Belzoni's Chamber [in the second pyramid] was examined, and as the eastern part consisted of rock, and the remainder of a pavement of two courses of squared stone, it was supposed that the sarcophagus might conceal a secret passage to the principal tomb, as Herodotus states was sometimes the case ; and a few blocks were taken up ; but nothing was found out either at this time or in August, when the whole of the pavement was removed by Mr. Perring, in consequence of the discovery of the large apartment in the Third Pyramid.

4 - Two parties had, on the 16th instant, begun to bore in the passage leading to the Queen's Chamber, in order to ascertain whether the communication existed, which appeared to be concealed by the stones let in under the step, where we had been so long employed. The borings were made near a round hole in the pavement, about six inches deep. Similar holes had been found in the Queen's Chamber, at the exterior of the north-western angle of the Second Pyramid, and in other places. (1)
(1) Mr. Perring says that these holes may be observed wherever the upper part of the courses of stone are exposed, and that they were intended to support the wooden machines mentioned by Herodotus for raising the stones, which he thinks were like the polyspaston of Vitruvius, but this machine is supposed to have consisted of an apparatus of blocks, and pullies, which were probably then unknown.

5 - The hole into Wellington's Chamber being practicable, I examined it with Mr. Hill. The floor was unequal, as it was composed of the reverse of the blocks of granite, that formed the ceiling of Davison's Chamber. It was entirely empty, excepting one piece of stone thrown into it by blasting. Not an insect or a bat appeared, nor the traces of any living animal. There had not been, indeed, any doorway or entrance ; and although some of the granite blocks in the southern and northern walls had lugs, or projections, yet the stones composing the roof rested upon them, so that it was impossible that they could have been moved up as a portcullis. This chamber, in fact, like Davison's and the others afterwards discovered, was merely a vacancy, or chamber of construction, to take off the weight of the building from the King's Chamber. Their dimensions are as follows : King's Chamber, thirty-four feet three inches, by seventeen feet one inch ; Davison's, thirty-eight feet four inches, by seventeen feet one inch ; Wellington's, thirty-eight feet six inches, by seventeen feet. In the ceilings alone was any exactness of construction preserved. These were beautifully polished, and had the finest joints, in order most probably to prevent the slightest accumulation of dust or of rubbish. In all other respects, the masonry in these apartments became less perfect as they ascended. The northern and southern walls of Wellington's, and of Davison's Chambers were of granite, the eastern and western of calcareous stone ; the ceiling consisted of nine blocks of granite laid from north to south, and were, like those in Davison's apartment, of a sufficient length to extend their bearings beyond the walls of the King's Chamber. The average height of the chamber (which varies, owing to the irregular surface of the floor) was about three feet eight inches. Mr. Perring, in the course of his survey, found that these apartments had been finished from the eastward, and that consequently the western sides were last built.

6 - In examining the ground to the northward of the Great Pyramid, I observed a line of rock projecting above the sand, which appeared to have been scalped down, and might, therefore, I considered, have contained an entrance to the subterraneous passage mentioned by Herodotus. It was parallel to the building, and about a hundred yards from it. But, upon removing the sand to the depth of six or seven feet, it was found to be in its natural state, and the work was given up. I at first entertained an idea that a grand ascent might have been formed from the plain below to the brow of the mountain upon which the Great Pyramid is placed ; but the side of the rock is covered with vast heaps of rubbish, fragments of stone, great quantities of coarse gravel, which have been brought from distant parts of the desert (probably from Dashoor), and with other materials, that have been used for fillings in, and for rubble work in the interior of the edifice. Two or three large holes of an angular shape have been cut in the platform before the pyramid, and a number of round ones about twelve inches in diameter, and eight or ten inches deep. The latter are in rows about five feet asunder, principally before the north-eastern angle of the building, where the blocks of stone would have been brought by the northern dyke. There is also a remarkable groove, or trench, which, as well as the holes, seems to have been used in the erection of scaffolding, or of machinery when the pyramid was built.

7 - In the course of the excavation at the northern front of the Great Pyramid, it was found that not only the lower part of it had been forced in search of an entrance, but that a large hole had been made through the pavement into a deep hollow, which had been filled up with rubble work, pieces of granite, and of other stones, and afterwards closed with large blocks, and effectually concealed by the pavement. The disclosure of it, therefore, could not have been the result of accident, but of an examination expressly made in search of a subterraneous passage, of which there is not the slightest indication in the interior of the pyramid, but where, on the contrary, an inclined passage from the regular entrance three hundred and twenty feet in length leads directly to a subterraneous chamber more than one hundred feet below the base. It is evident, therefore, that in very remote times some tradition existed of a subterraneous passage peculiar to this pyramid ; for, although the stones at the base of the Second Pyramid had been forced, yet the pavement at that place did not appear to have been attempted notwithstanding that the existence of a lower entrance must have been manifest to all, who examined the interior of that building. These facts coincide with the account of Herodotus, that the tomb of Cheops was at so great a depth, that it was surrounded by the water of the Nile, and differed from any thing to be seen in the Second Pyramid, a description the more remarkable, as it relates to the only pyramid which contains chambers in the masonry, and cannot apply to any apartment at present discovered in it.
It is difficult to imagine that the Great Pyramid was intended to be the tomb of more than one individual. Indeed the whole structure seems built for the security of the King's Chamber, and for the sarcophagus within it ; but if the dread of violation was as strongly felt as antient authors seem to describe, it is possible that the apartments and passages in the masonry were intended as a blind, and that the tomb in this, as in all the other pyramids at Gizeh, was an excavation in the rock at a depth sufficient to elude discovery. Or, on the other hand, if the testimony of Herodotus is to be refused on this point (although it has been found correct in many other instances), we must conclude that Cheops was actually buried in the King's Chamber, and not, according to the usual manner, in an excavation ; and that the unfinished subterraneous apartment was intended to deceive, and to support the fictions of the priests, which were communicated to Herodotus. It was my intention to have blasted the rock to a considerable depth, in search of a communication ; the discovery of this fissure, therefore, saved me a great deal of trouble and expense ; and as much interest was attached to this inquiry, I directed, when I left Egypt in 1837, that a shaft should be sunk in the floor of the subterraneous chamber, to the depth of fifty feet. This operation was attended with difficulty, from the want of a free circulation of air ; but, in September 1838, it had penetrated thirty-eight feet through the solid rock, without any appearance of a chamber. An excavation of this kind appeared to be the easiest way of ascertaining the truth, as it is nearly in the centre of the pyramid, and as there is no clue, by which any regular entrance can be found.
As it is evident, in many parts of Egypt, that the desert has been continually encroaching, particularly from the westward, there was probably little or no sand upon the rocks at Gizeh when the pyramids were erected. It would also appear that they were broken open soon after they were built, and at about the same time ; for at the bottom of the mounds, at the northern fronts of the two largest, the strata of undisturbed desert sand are of inconsiderable depth below the lines of rubbish produced by the first aggressions committed upon them ; indeed Diodorus Siculus states, that neither the bodies of Cheops nor of Chephrenes were deposited in the pyramids, from an apprehension of the violence to which they might be exposed ; and we know that they were open in the time of Herodotus, four hundred and forty-five years before Christ, and in that of Pliny, A. D. 79, as these authors describe their interior construction ; nor is it likely that when once the solid masonry was removed from the interior of the passages, they were ever again closed up, excepting by the effects of decay and of dilapidation. A considerable space of time must have elapsed before the regular entrances were so effectually concealed by the accumulation of stones and rubbish, that even the positions of them were forgotten, which appears to have been the case, when the Caliphs penetrated into the interior through the solid masonry ; although, as the Arabian historians relate, they seem to have possessed some knowledge respecting their construction, for in both instances, the excavations have been carried on from the centres of the northern fronts, and have been directed eastwards, at proper levels, so as to intersect the passages with an exactness, that could not have been the effect of chance.

8 - After having gone round the several works, I was sent for about two o'clock to the Great Pyramid, as the casingstones at the base had been discovered. The size and angle of the building could therefore be exactly determined, and all doubts were removed respecting a revetment. Two of the blocks were in their original position, nearly in the centre of the pyramid ; and those adjoining them to the eastward must have been covered by the mound of rubbish for a considerable time before they were removed, as the exact space, which they had occupied, was left in it, like a perfect model. Why they were thus taken out sideways, and by what means, without disturbing any part of the mass above them, it is difficult to say.
They were quite perfect, had been hewn into the required angle before they were built in, and had then been polished down to one uniform surface ; the joints were scarcely perceptible, and not wider than the thickness of silver paper ; and such is the tenacity of the cement with which they are held together, that a fragment of one, that has been destroyed, remained firmly fixed in its original alignement, notwithstanding the lapse of time and the violence, to which it had been exposed. The pavement beyond the line of the building was well laid, and beautifully finished ; but beneath the edifice it was worked with even greater exactness, and to the most perfect level, in order, probably, to obtain a lasting foundation for the magnificent structure to be built upon it. I consider that the workmanship displayed in the King's Chamber, in this pavement, and in the casing-stones, is perfectly unrivalled ; and there is no reason to doubt that the whole exterior of this vast structure was covered with the same excellent masonry.

9 - The excavation near the roof in the Queen's apartment was again resumed. The chamber over Lady Arbuthnot's (subsequently called Campbell's) was opened and minutely examined. The people employed at the mouth of the southern Air-channel could be distinctly heard from it ; its length was thirty-seven feet ten inches, and its width twenty feet six inches; it was entirely empty, without door or entrance, and seemed to have been intended for the same purpose as the chambers below it ; but appeared to be the last and to complete the series, as it had an inclined roof, like the Queen's and Belzoni's Chambers, composed of eleven slabs of calcareous stone, twelve feet three inches long. They rested upon a low wall about three feet high, which allowed for the inequalities of the floor, composed, as in the other instances, of the reverse of the granite slabs that formed the ceiling of the rooms below it ; the stone, by the side of which the entrance was worked up, was six feet six inches in thickness. Holes had been cut in the floor, apparently for the purpose of sustaining temporary supports of wood for the erection of the roof. Excepting the floor, the whole of the chamber was built of calcareous stone. The joints were open, and there were considerable settlements ; some of the stones of the roof also were cracked, which was not surprising, considering the immense weight they supported. When we first entered this chamber, the floor was covered with the same deposit of dust which we had observed in the apartments below it, and, in addition, the calcareous stones were covered with an exudation, which had the appearance of white feathers, and resembled that afterwards found in the Third Pyramid. There were many quarrymarks similar to those in the other chambers, and also several red lines crossing each other at right angles, with
black equilateral triangles described near the intersections, in order probably to obtain a right angle.

10 - (...) it is to be believed that the King's Chamber is the principal apartment, and the security of the sarcophagus within it the great object for which the Pyramid was erected. Many arguments might be adduced in support of this opinion ; amongst others, it may be observed that the proportions of the passages correspond with the dimensions of the sarcophagus, and that their arrangement seems expressly intended to facilitate the deposition, and to prevent the removal of it. The Queen's Chamber may be considered as an appendage to the King's, in the same way as the apartments in the sepulchres at Thebes. It may also, like those in David's tomb, mentioned by Josephus, have contained treasures ; but, whatever may have been the object, it has evidently been concealed with great care. It is also to be observed that the King's Chamber has been secured by four granite portcullises, and by the solid masonry with which the whole length of the passages have been closed ; that the well has been formed to supply with air the people employed in filling from the interior the reascending passage at the bottom of the great gallery, with blocks laid up in the gallery for that purpose ; and that it also afforded to them an escape by the lower passage when the work was completed. The entrance passage was probably afterwards filled up from the exterior. The great importance of the King's Chamber is also proved by the air-channels expressly made for its ventilation, and also by the precautions taken to secure even the walls from any superincumbent pressure by the five chambers above it, which are less carefully built, and of worse materials, in proportion to their distance from it ; whilst, at the same time, the exquisite finish of the ceilings in the four lower apartments prevent any accumulation of rubbish, and it would appear, also, the deposition of the sparry excrescence, which was found only in the upper. Nor should the masonry of the chamber be forgotten, which is probably the finest specimen in the world. It consists entirely of enormous masses of polished granite worked down, and laid with the greatest exactness, and has retained its original perfection for unnumbered centuries, whilst other mighty fabrics, composed of coarse workmanship and materials, have gradually crumbled away into shapeless masses of stones and of rubbish. In this instance every block is as fresh and as perfect as when taken from the quarry ; and such is the ponderous solidity and perfection of their texture, and the labour and science employed in their arrangement, that they seem to set at defiance the effects of time, and the efforts of human violence. It has been remarked that the upper chambers were finished from the east, and the vast blocks of this floor appear to have been closed in by a smaller oblong stone at the north-western corner. This had been removed, no doubt, in very early times, in search of treasures supposed to have been concealed beneath the sarcophagus. The excavation is mentioned by Greaves; and, when it was cleared out for the boring, an opportunity was afforded of observing the great care with which the supports and bedding for the blocks had been constructed, and the extraordinary manner in which they were worked and put together.

11 - The circular holes in the sides and floor of the apartment were probably intended to receive beams for the support of a scaffolding used in trimming and finishing the walls, or to assist in the deposition of the sarcophagus in the sepulchral chamber.

Pyramides de Guizeh : l'état des lieux à l'arrivée de Howard Vyse en Égypte (1837)

Veuillez excuser mon ignorance ! Mais j'imaginais l'ouvrage de Richard William Howard Vyse (1784-1853) - Operations carried on at the pyramids of Gizeh in 1837, 3 vol., 1840 - comme un "Catalogue des Trois Pyramides and Co.", un récit au jour le jour et purement factuel de découvertes qui auront marqué l'histoire de l'égyptologie : un p'tit coup, non pas de dynamite comme on le voit écrit de-ci de-là (Nobel fera la une de l'actualité vingt ans plus tard), mais de "gunpowder" (poudre à canon), et hop ! Voici une nouvelle chambre de décharge ouverte au-dessus de la Chambre du Roi. Certes, en suivant Vyse et ses acolytes (Perring, Caviglia...) au travers des pages de ce volumineux récit, nous sommes informés quasiment en temps réel de la progression au cœur des trois pyramides majeures de Guizeh, pour nous cantonner à ce seul secteur. C'est bien sûr l'essentiel du contenu de l'ouvrage, à savoir l'enchaînement des projets, des découvertes, des échecs. Le tout sur fond de négociations avec l'administration locale (le Conseil suprême des antiquités de l'époque), d'organisation quelque peu complexe des divers chantiers, et de bisbilles avec ce cher Caviglia qui s'est vu contraint, le big boss ayant parlé, de faire ses valises. "Depuis les recherches méthodiques et complètes de MM. Vyse et Perring, écrira J.J. Ampère dans la Revue des deux mondes, en 1846, il n'est pas resté dans les pyramides un coin pour les mystères ou le mystère."
Cet inventaire des découvertes, outre le fait qu'il serait fastidieux (rien ne remplace la lecture de l'ouvrage de Vyse), n'entre pas dans le cadre que j'ai fixé à ce blog, plus spécifiquement attentif aux aspects techniques de la construction des pyramides.
Néanmoins, pour cette première note consacrée au Sherlock Holmes de la pierre (so sorry pour ce nouvel anachronisme !), il me paraît intéressant de faire un état des lieux, autrement dit de rappeler ce qui était connu des pyramides au moment où le fouineur de ces masses antiques et solennelles est entré en scène. Pour cela, rien de plus simple : il suffit de relire ce qu'il écrit lui-même.
Dans un deuxième temps (une autre note à venir), je tenterai de relever les maigres et rares réflexions de Vyse ou Perring sur les techniques de construction qui nous intéressent particulièrement. Ces notes sont très éparses, parfois cachées dans une footnote, révélatrices toutefois d'un réel intérêt porté non seulement au "quoi", mais également au "comment".
En préambule à l'état des lieux, qui figure, comme on pouvait s'en douter, au début du premier volume d'Operations carried on at the pyramids of Gizeh in 1837, j'ai remarqué cette entrée en matière qui, dans le contexte de la campagne de récupération par l'Égypte de son patrimoine culturel disséminé de par le monde, retrouve une étrange actualité :


"It was understood that the antiquities discovered under the firmaun (*) were to belong to the Pasha, and that, without his Highness's permission, nothing whatsoever could be retained by either Colonel Campbell or myself. Separate lists are in consequence subjoined of the different articles found at Gizeh since the 13th of February, distinguishing those, which we were allowed to keep in consequence of an application to Boghos Bey; and since my return to England I have sent every thing of value to the British Museum. The Sarcophagus of Mycerinus was removed with considerable trouble and expense out of the Third Pyramid for the same purpose ; as I was convinced that owing to the brittle quality of the stone, of which it was composed, it would soon have been entirely destroyed had it been left in an open pyramid. I was the more confirmed in this apprehension by having found, to my great regret, that the magnificent casing-stones discovered at the base of the Great Pyramid were so much defaced, even during the time that I remained at Gizeh, that I thought it my duty, upon leaving the place, to cover them again with a considerable quantity of rubbish, and thereby to do all in my power to protect from further injury one of the most interesting features of these unrivalled monuments. I am sorry to add, that my precautions were unsuccessful, and that I have been subsequently informed that the blocks have been again uncovered and much injured." 

(*) ce mot signifie un décret ou mandat émis par l'autorité, une sorte d'ordre de mission, de sauf-conduit ou de plan de route.
 
(Traduction très sommaire, à gros traits : Ce qui est découvert en Égypte appartient à l'Égypte. Sauf permission explicite de la plus haute autorité de ce pays, Vyse et Campbell ne "retiendront" rien pour eux, ou, plus précisément, pour le British Museum... Pour une plus grande protection, le sarcophage de Mykérinos, découvert dans la troisième pyramide, devait ainsi prendre la route de l'Angleterre. Mais on sait ce qu'il en est advenu : des robots sont toujours à sa recherche dans les fonds marins au large des côtes d'Espagne. Quant aux pierres de revêtement découvertes au pied de la Grande Pyramide, elles n'ont pas connu un meilleur sort : pour les protéger, Vyse les fit dissimuler sous un tas de déchets, mais en vain.)
État de la Grande Pyramide quand Vyse arrive en Égypte :
The inclined passage from the entrance to the subterraneous apartment, that apartment itself, and the unfinished passage proceeding to the southward from it, were open, although much encumbered with stones and rubbish ; as were the forced and upper passages leading to the King's and Queen's Chambers. These two chambers, together with Davison's, and the communication, or well, descending from the great upper passage to that of the subterraneous apartment, were also open. In the floor of the subterraneous apartment, an excavation had been made to the depth of a few feet ; some stones had also been removed from behind the wall at the south-eastern corner of Davison's Chamber : one of the blocks composing the pavement had been taken up near the north-western corner of the King's Chamber, and an excavation had been carried on beneath the Sarcophagus : this last, however, was almost entirely filled up with rubbish. The mouth of the southern Air Channel had been partially enlarged, and an excavation of a few feet had been made near the portcullis, along the course of the northern Air Channel. In the Queen's Chamber a considerable passage had been forced into the solid masonry, from the niche on the eastern side. There was also a large hollow near the granite blocks at the commencement of the ascending passage, which was supposed to have been the forced entrance made by the Caliphs. These were the only excavations of any consequence. On the exterior of the Pyramid a vast heap of stones and rubbish, 50 feet in height, extended from the base to the entrance of the inclined passage.
(...) We carefully examined Davison's Chamber in the Great Pyramid ; and the result of this examination was a conjecture, that it formed a sort of entresol between the King's Chamber and some large sepulchral apartment over it, to which the inclined ceiling of the Great Passage was, probably, an entrance. I also thought that the channels proceeding from the King's Chamber communicated with other apartments.
(...) We visited the subterraneous chamber in the Great Pyramid, which had partially been cleared out, and in which Mr. Caviglia had excavated, when engaged with Mr. Salt, to the depth of a few feet. He did not appear to think that there was any apartment beneath it.


 (Je remarque simplement deux "conjectures" - le mot était à la mode chez les égyptologues - :
1) la première chambre de décharge ne serait-elle pas une sorte d'entresol entre la Chambre du Roi et "quelque grand appartement sépulcral" ?
2) les conduits ("channels") partant de la chambre du Roi ne communiqueraient-ils pas avec d'autres "appartements" ?)


État de la seconde pyramide :
The upper entrance, conducting to Belzoni's Chamber, and the chamber itself, with the descending passage returning to the north, were open ; as were also the horizontal passage to the forced portcullis, and a considerable part of the re-ascending passage leading to the lower entrance. The inclined passage from the horizontal part of this communication, together with the small chamber to which it conducted, were likewise accessible. Several stones had been removed from the pavement near the Sarcophagus in Belzoni's Chamber, and a large excavation had been carried on across the upper horizontal passage to a considerable extent. A mound, similar to that on the exterior of the Great Pyramid, extended from the base to the upper entrance. The chasm in the centre of the northern front, by which the Caliphs are supposed to have entered, and in which Belzoni commenced his operations, was apparent ; and there is no doubt that, before the stones had collapsed, it communicated with the excavation, already mentioned, across the horizontal passage.
(...) In the Second Pyramid it was evident that the reascending passage, returning to the north, led to a lower entrance.

État de la troisième pyramide :

In the northern front of the third Pyramid a considerable chasm had been made, said, by Denon, to have been the work of the Mamelukes ; while below it another smaller chasm had been carried on upon the level of the upper line of granite, which forms the front of the lower part of the Pyramid. A great deal of rubbish, and many large blocks of calcareous stone and of granite, were lying around it ; particularly on the northern side, in which the above-mentioned excavations had been made. Some of these had been taken away at the centre ; but the difficulty of removing the heavy masses without the assistance of machinery, had put a stop to the operation. Opposite the centre, and at some little distance from the base of the Pyramid, a pit about 20 or 30 feet square had been excavated in the rubbish, the sides of which had been supported by a revetment of large stones. Several blocks had been forced from a pavement at the bottom of this pit, it would seem in search of an entrance into the Pyramid, and many others yet remained there, similar to those afterwards uncovered to the eastward ; but there was no appearance that the Pyramid had ever been opened.

"Le procédé par lequel on a pu accomplir ce prodigieux travail est encore une question controversée" (J.J.Ampère - XIXe s.)

Dans son Voyage en Égypte et en Nubie, publié en 1868, l'historien-voyageur-écrivain Jean-Jacques Ampère (1800-1864), de l'Académie française, donne l'avantage à Hérodote - malgré son "côté puéril" ! - dans le match qui l'oppose, par-delà les siècles, à Diodore de Sicile.
On notera aussi cette étrange appréciation sur l'état des recherches archéologiques au sein de la Grande Pyramide : depuis que Vyse et Perring sont passés par là, avec les techniques de choc que l'on sait, Khéops ne présente plus de mystère(s) ! Ce n'est pas, c'est le moins qu'on puisse dire, la tendance actuelle.
Enfin, cette phrase-couperet qui prête à la méditation : "Il faudrait du silence pour le sommeil de tant de siècles." Champollion, le déchiffreur des hiéroglyphes, disait lui-même :"Il me faut le silence absolu pour entendre la voix des ancêtres."

(...) le sommet des obélisques se terminait toujours en forme de pyramide ; c'est ce qu'on appelle le pyramidion. Un obélisque est une pyramide dont la base est très allongée ; or la pyramide, par sa forme, qui offre plus qu'aucune autre des conditions de solidité, la pyramide était l'expression naturelle de la permanence et de la durée.C'est pour cela sans doute qu'on donna une structure pyramidale aux gigantesques tombes des anciens rois. Ce que l'on voulait exprimer et pour ainsi dire écrire par ces masses de pierre, c'était cette idée : solidité, durée, éternité. (...) Ainsi l'étude comparée des hiéroglyphes et des monuments nous montre que l'architecture, aussi bien que la peinture, était une écriture véritable, une écriture en relief, une écriture colossale.
(...) La forme des pyramides est pour elles une condition de stabilité inébranlable. Dans un corps pyramidal, la base étant très large et le centre de gravité peu élevé, la résistance que le corps oppose au renversement est presque égale à son poids ; de là la grande solidité des pyramides.
(...) Le procédé par lequel on a pu accomplir ce prodigieux travail est encore une question controversée. Diodore dit positivement que les Égyptiens n'avaient pas de machines, et il est certain que sur les monuments, en particulier sur les monuments funèbres, où sont représentées toutes les occupations et toutes les industries des Égyptiens, on n'a vu jusqu'ici nulle trace de la machine la moins compliquée. On a trouvé des poulies dans les tombes ; mais il faudrait être bien sûr de l'âge des tombes où ces instruments ont été trouvés pour prononcer qu'ils sont égyptiens et non pas grecs on romains. On n'a donc pu découvrir aucune trace certaine de la mécanique égyptienne, et, jusqu'à nouvel ordre, le plus vraisemblable est d'admettre avec quelques restrictions le récit d'Hérodote. On voit encore les trous qui servaient à soutenir les échafaudages qu'il décrit, et les restes des plans inclinés au moyen desquels on a pu hisser, comme il le dit, les pierres jusqu'au sommet des pyramides. Il faut se rappeler que l'objet qu'on se propose au moyen des machines est de suppléer au nombre des bras. Je lis dans un traité de physique estimé : "Un homme ou un moteur quelconque dont la force est d'ailleurs modérée, mais qui est toujours disponible, pourra, en travaillant pendant une durée proportionnellement plus longue, produire l'effet que cent hommes, que mille hommes produiraient en un instant par leur action simultanée ; mais on préférera souvent n'employer qu'un seul homme et une machine, parce qu'il est souvent très incommode et très dispendieux d'en réunir un aussi grand nombre, et très difficile de les faire agir de concert." Or, cela n'était nullement difficile aux Pharaons ; ils n'avaient donc pas besoin de recourir à ces machines qui font en employant moins de bras ce qu'eux produisaient par l'action simultanée d'un grand nombre d'hommes, action que le physicien cité plus haut déclare équivaloir à celle des machines. Mais comment les Égyptiens auraient-ils élevé de si grands monuments sans graver sur leurs faces un seul hiéroglyphe ? Hérodote parle d'une inscription tracée sur la grande pyramide : des inscriptions en caractères antiques et inconnus existaient encore au Moyen Âge, selon les auteurs arabes ; aujourd'hui on ne lit rien sur les murs des pyramides. Cette contradiction apparente s'explique facilement : il est maintenant établi que la grande pyramide était primitivement couverte d'un revêtement en pierre polie. M. Letronne a fait l'histoire des dégradations que ce revêtement a subies de siècle en siècle, et ses débris ont été trouvés près du monument même. C'est sur le revêtement de la grande pyramide, dont une partie fut détruite par Saladin et dont une partie subsistait encore au commencement du quinzième siècle, que se lisait sans doute l'inscription rapportée par Hérodote. Probablement elle contenait autre chose que le compte des légumes consommés par les ouvriers pendant la construction des pyramides ; on devait y lire le nom du roi Chéops, de même qu'on lisait sur la troisième pyramide le nom du roi Mycerinus. Malheureusement, cette fois comme tant d'autres, c'est le côté puéril de la narration qui a frappé Hérodote.
(...) La visite dans l'intérieur des pyramides est rendue assez incommode par les cris et les gesticulations forcenées des Arabes qui vous entraînent sur les pentes des couloirs ténébreux. Ils prennent le moment où vous êtes seul avec eux dans le sein de la montagne de pierre pour vous demander d'une voix retentissante et d'un air presque menaçant un grand cadeau : Bakchich ketir ketir. Il n'y a certes rien à craindre d'eux ; mais il est désagréable d'être poursuivi et assourdi par les bruyantes et impérieuses demandes de ces ciceroni à figure de brigands. Il faudrait du silence pour le sommeil de tant de siècles. Du reste, il y a peu d'observations à faire dans l'intérieur des pyramides. On entre dans la grande pyramide du côté nord par un corridor qui descend d'abord, puis remonte et vous conduit à la salle qu'on nomme la chambre du roi, et qui renferme un sarcophage de granit. Le travail de la maçonnerie est merveilleux, et la lumière agitée des torches est reflétée par un mur du plus beau poli. De cette salle partent deux conduits étroits qui vont aboutir au dehors : on est d'accord aujourd'hui à n'y voir que des ventilateurs nécessaires aux ouvriers pendant qu'ils travaillaient dans le cœur de la pyramide.
(...) Cinq chambres plus basses sont placées au-dessus de la chambre du roi ; on a reconnu qu'elles n'ont pas d'autre objet que d'alléger par leur vide le poids de la masse énorme de maçonnerie qui la presse. Après avoir visité cette chambre, on redescend la pente qu'on a gravie pour y monter ; on retrouve le corridor par lequel on est entré, et, en le reprenant où on l'a quitté, on arrive dans une autre chambre placée presque au-dessous de la première et dans l'axe central de la pyramide ; cette chambre s'appelle la chambre de la reine. Beaucoup plus bas est une troisième chambre taillée dans le roc, et à laquelle on arrive soit par un puits, soit par un passage incliné qui va rejoindre l'entrée de la pyramide.
Telle est la disposition de la grande pyramide ; celle des deux autres est analogue : seulement leur maçonnerie n'offre aucun vide, et les chambres qu'elles renferment sont creusées dans le roc. Devant ces simples faits tombent beaucoup d'hypothèses sur la destination des pyramides. Il faut renoncer à y mettre la scène des initiations mystérieuses de l'Égypte, comme le faisait l'auteur de Séthos, et comme l'a fait l'auteur de l'Epicurien. Ce qui était peut-être encore permis au commencement du dix-huitième siècle l'est moins au dix-neuvième, et c'est, il faut l'avouer, une singulière hardiesse à Thomas Moore d'avoir placé tant d'aventures et de merveilles dans l'intérieur et dans les environs des pyramides. Après les explorations de nos savants, il était étrange d'y supposer des régions inconnues. Aujourd'hui on est encore plus certain de n'avoir rien à découvrir en ce genre. Depuis les recherches méthodiques et complètes de MM. Vyse et Perring, il n'est pas resté dans les pyramides un coin pour les mystères ou le mystère.
La grande pyramide, qui au dehors ne présente aucun hiéroglyphe, en offre au dedans un bien petit nombre ; mais ils sont d'une haute importance, parce qu'ils confirment le témoignage des anciens, qui attribuent cette pyramide à un roi nommé Chéops ou Souphis. Or, le nom d'un roi Choufou est écrit en hiéroglyphes très distincts dans l'intérieur de la grande pyramide. Personne ne doute que Chéops et Souphis ne soient deux altérations diverses de Choufou. Ce nom n'a point été trouvé dans la salle du sarcophage, mais dans les petites chambres de soulagement situées au-dessus. Les hiéroglyphes sont de couleur rouge et mêlés à des marques semblables à celles qu'on voit dans les anciennes carrières d'Égypte. De plus ils ne se rencontrent sur aucune des pierres provenant de l'emplacement même des pyramides, mais seulement sur celles qui ont été apportées, à travers le fleuve, des carrières de Tourah. Tout conduit donc à penser que le nom du roi Chéops et les hiéroglyphes dont il est accompagné ont été tracés dans les carrières. Ces hiéroglyphes n'en sont pas moins précieux et n'en font pas moins remonter l'extraction des matériaux des pyramides à cet antique roi. Il est fort difficile de reconnaître les autres hiéroglyphes qui se voient sur ces pierres : ils sont tracés avec une grande négligence. On aura peut-être quelque peine à déchiffrer dans six mille ans une ligne griffonnée de nos jours sur un moellon par quelque entrepreneur en bâtiments ou quelque maître maçon. Voilà où nous en sommes pour les caractères disséminés sur les pierres de la grande pyramide. Cependant ce sont de vrais hiéroglyphes, et il ne faut pas, comme Caviglia, y voir de l'hébreu.
